  • The Issue of Tax

    post date: 1999-06-22 12:00

It's been said that there are only two things in life that are certain - death and taxes. It doesn't have to be this way.

Okay, after that great openner, you're probably wondering how I intend on dealing with the issue of death, well I'm not going to even bother getting into that one here, and will leave THAT topic for another article. What I'm talking about is taxes.

Now there are many kinds of taxes, some of them open, some of them hidden. But one thing is for certain, we are paying WAY too many of them. I'm sure there are a lot of you who do not understand my positions when it comes to government style, but I am a self declared Revolutionary Technocratic Libertarian, once again I would go into details here, but I'm not here to talk about my full political stance, only about the issue of taxes.

So with that in mind, let me continue from the statement that we are paying too many taxes. North America in particular is so heavily over taxed, that we are stifling industry, and destroying jobs. Now I can hear you Canadians saying, "But what about Health Care, what about Education? We have to pay the extra price to have the best health care system in the world, and the best public education system in the world." Well I'm sorry, but I think you had better look at the rest of the world, because we DO NOT have the best health care system in the world, and we do not have the best education system in the world. Our health care system is so utterly screwed up that there are waiting lines, some which the patients never survive, to get in. You go and say, "well that's the price of public health care", and go screaming off about 'two-teer' health care being an evil way for the rich to jump the lines. Well excuse me, I'm not rich, but I support a system where if someone wants to have privately payed for health care in private clinics, and that gets them out of the lineup for public hospitals, that person has not jumped the line, they've gone and removed themselves from the public line so there is more room for the rest of us. Not to mention I'm sure there will still be a line even in the private clinics.

Okay, I digress. I'm talking about taxes here. Try to guess what I think the worst tax is. Is it the GST? Nope. Is it the PST? Nope. Gas tax? Alcohol Tax? Tabacco Tax? Nope Nope and Nope! It's Income Tax!

Yes, that's right I said Income Tax. The temporary tax originally created to pay for the expences of World War I (as in One, not Two, One) and has been shoved down our throats and up our asses ever since!

Take the story of the 70 year old man, retired for many years, earning a pention which barely pays his bills, and STILL paying income tax! That is outrageous! I don't think that anyone who is retired should have to pay income tax! It's a sickening abuse of the system by our elected dictatorship that we call a government.

Of course income tax should be eliminated altogether, totally removed as it is unethical and immoral to be stealing the wages of men when the make it rather than when they spend it.

Now note the statement at the end there, unlike most Libertarians, I think that in order to pay for a working health care and education system, we must have some form of tax, but I believe it does not have to be income tax. That is a radical notion yes, but it is possible. "How", you say, "the costs of the government are terrible, we have so many programs to maintain."

Exactly, the government has become a gigantic behemot, gluttonous and wasteful. They have their fingers in way too many things. Healthcare and Education should be accessible to everyone, they are services that the government should continue to fund. Welfare should be completely rethought so that (Un)Employment Insurance is easily available, plus any disabled persons incapable of working can receive a disability fund instead of welfare. As for anyone who is perfectly capable of working, but cannot find a job, if they want money from the government, they'll have to apply for Workfare - government job programs to employ those currently abusing the welfare system.

I guess my digressions actually have a lot to do with taxes, but I'm getting tired, so I guess I'll leave you with this - taxes are not in the same leauge as death and only have one thing in common - We can live without them!
