Apr 11, 2013 ~ the future of huri.net

Anyone who actually reads this site, has probably noticed that it's gone rather dormant in the last few years. In fact, half the posts (like this one) are about the site itself, rather than being something interesting that people might actually want to read. So, I am planning a reboot. Not completely from scratch, I will save most of the old content, at least the stuff that's worth saving. This article will likely not be among the saved content. I'm working on a new content management system that will allow me to be more productive, and will inspire me to actually update the site on a more regular basis.

Apr 28, 2012 ~ Summer of Wonder

I remember it like it was yesterday. Isn’t that what they always say? Honestly, my memories aren’t quite as good as all that. Some of it may even be a bit foggy now, but most of it still pretty vivid. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that summer; it was a summer of discovery, a summer of magic, a summer of wonder.

Mar 12, 2012 ~ Some sites are now offline

So, I rebuilt my server today. In the process I decided to just turn off a bunch of sites that I wasn't maintaining anymore. So if you've found this page but were expecting something else, that's probably why.

May 11, 2011 ~ Goodnight GreyNoise, Hello BlackNoise

So, GreyNoise was pissing me off with how it mangled Unicode stuff. The bug was somewhere deep in the belly of Template::TAL. I didn't feel like hunting for it. So, BlackNoise was born. It's a fork of GreyNoise that uses its own template format instead of TAL. The new templates are not as pretty (in fact they are pretty horrid looking, like old-school PHP) but it works. So, welcome BlackNoise. Next up: better navigation in stories.

Apr 07, 2011 ~ Hobbies

Everyone has hobbies, well almost everyone does anyway. Those who don't, really should. Hobbies help you stay relaxed. They also help keep you from going insane. Some people play sports, some collect things, some go fishing or hunting, and others yet let their creative juices flow. I'm one of the latter.

Apr 01, 2011 ~ Free Haven, and other stories

So, I have a few ideas for some new stories. I always have a few ideas on the burner. Most of them aren't more than faint concepts with no real story. Other's are more well formed.

Feb 02, 2011 ~ Welcome GreyNoise

Well, I had started the migration of this site to WhiteNoise, but Perl 6 is currently so slow and buggy, that I've given up. So, I wrote GreyNoise to replace it. After some growing pains (Perl 5 has it's own set of issues) the site is now finally back online (mostly.) Along with a new engine, the site has a completely new theme as well (for the first time in almost 2 years.)

Jan 14, 2011 ~ Good Night Webtoo

Webtoo Websight has been my custom website engine for 10 years. By the end of this month, it will be no more. Read more to find out what will happen to this site shortly.

Feb 14, 2010 ~ Zig Zag

So, if you've tried to visit this website between 2010-02-05 and 2010-02-13, you probably noticed that it had been replaced by a rather boring and empty page, that told a story about how I no longer had a server, and thus had given up on restoring the content from my former site (this one.) Well, I have yet to get the hard drive from my old server, so there may be some content missing on here, but I did find a fairly recent backup. Anyway, the circumstances behind the site moving, can be found by reading more of this article.

Jan 25, 2010 ~ PSpec = RSpec + Cucumber for Perl 6

I've been playing with Ruby lately, and am quite enjoying it. It seems like a very clean language, and has a lot of good features going for it as well, including testing frameworks such as RSpec and Cucumber. Being me, I wondered what a Perl 6 version would look like. Also being me, I decided that the best way to find out, would be to write it.

Jan 13, 2010 ~ Renaming Hash Keys

Not sure if you've ever needed to rename a hash key before, but I have. I also noticed that it doesn't look like any of the languages I work with have a native method/function to rename hash keys. So, I've taken the liberty to write them. These are just for fun, and are released as public domain code snippets, feel free to use them in whatever you want. There are versions for Perl 6, Ruby, Perl 5 and Python. Enjoy!

Dec 29, 2009 ~ Upcoming Writing

This is related to the last update I had on my writing projects, and offers a small glimpse of what is to come. In the full article I have some details on what I'm planning to do to expand my short story, A Snake in the Garden of Eden, as well as a very small excerpt from my planned micro-fiction series The Ark, and a concept pitch for another series of short fiction called Gates. If you like short science fiction stories, read the rest.

Dec 09, 2009 ~ Vigenere cipher in Perl 6

So, yesterday the Perl 6 Advent Calendar had a challenge, to make a decent version of the ancient Caesar Cipher. Well, while looking into that, I found an article about the Vigenère cipher and thought, hey, that could be interesting. Further searches revealed that there was already a Perl 5 module that had been designed to implement the cipher. I took it upon myself to port Crypt::Vigenere to Perl 6, and think the results are pretty cool. It's not a CPAN-ready module by any stretch, but it gives you an idea of what is possible using Perl 6, right now, today.

Nov 26, 2009 ~ The End of The Beginning

Next year, this website will be 15 years old, the domain name 13. Shade will be 12, Jargon 11, the name creative abstractions 10. Some people say the world will end in 2012. Well, for this website, as it currently exists, it ends in 2010.
