HURI|NET, Strange and twisted fun since 1995

"We take English for granted but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. There is no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger, no apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads which aren’t sweet, are meat.”

Upgrade in Progress (2008-07-11) / Expect Breakage

The time has come. That's right, upgrade time. Webtoo Websight 5 is nearly ready to replace the whole site, and in preparation for that, some changes have been made already. Read the full article for more information.

First off, the website is now being powered by a strange hybrid creature I'm calling Webtoo 4.9. Well first, all pages are initially parsed by a copy of Webtoo Websight 5, along with a special plugin called Legacy which scans for Webtoo 4 pages. If it find a version 4 page, it passes control of that page over to a modified verison of Webtoo 4, that parses the old-style plugins (in particular, Websight 4).

What this means is that I can slowly migrate pages over from the old architecture to the new one, without having to do it all at once. Of course, what it also means is, there may be broken pages showing up.

The second change I have already made to the site is, that the virtual host functionality from Webtoo 5, has been implemented (including in Webtoo 4 pages, via a quick hack). This means there is no more /page/huri/ in the URL. I have set up redirects to automatically redirect accesses to the old URLs to the new ones. It took 2 lines in the page config. Yeah, I like Webtoo 5 :-)

So anyway, more changes coming soon, as the whole site will be switching to Webtoo Websight 5 once it's ready to replace all end-user facing functionality. Once it's ready to replace all administrative functionality, I will also be migrating The Ablen, BeyondAlways and the Totten-Prime Family websites to this platform.
