Coming Soon: The End (and the beginning) (2008-07-03) / webtoo, websight, website, massive change

So, as you may know, Webtoo Websight is the software that powers this website. It has had many rewrites over the years. Version 2 was a complete rewrite, so was version 3. Version 4 wasn't a complete rewrite, but it was a massive restructuring. Well the biggest change EVER is coming soon, and it's called Webtoo Websight 5. Read the rest to find out more.

Yeah, that's right. Webtoo Websight 5 is on its way. I'm slowly working on it in my spare time, and its getting close to being ready.

Of course, when I say close to being ready, I mean, it can parse simple pages, has basic functionality, and could say run Jargon and Linkage right now. It cannot however replace the blog-like (most of huri.net) or wiki-like (the Xadaeryn Encyclopedia) pages yet, as I have not finished that functionality. When it is finished, I'll be able to bring the Spin-A-Story back too, at long last. With one caveat, to add entries, you'll need to sign up for an account, as I don't need spam (other than the canned meat variety) showing up in the story.

This time when I say rewrite, I mean 99.5% of the code is being written from scratch. It's not that I'm taking an existing module and plugin and "converting" it to the new framework, it's more that I'm saying "okay, what does this current module do, and how can I implement that as a plugin in the most efficient way possible?"

Backwards-compatibility is not a goal. Which of course does mean that every single page of this site will have to be transferred to the new platform.

I'll be writing scripts to automate as much of that process as possible, but some of it is impossible to automate, so there is going to be a lot of work put into it.

Which is why, while I'm at it, I'm going to migrate the rest of my sites back to Webtoo. So The Ablen, the Totten-Prime Family and the BeyondAlways Network sites will all be moving to Webtoo Websight 5, from Mediawiki, Wordpress 2 and a custom engine respectively.

I'll probably set up something where I can migrate date slowly to the new system, replacing certain sections first.

While I'm at it, I'll have to write new themes for the non-WT sites, and I'll probably update the themes for the sites that do use Webtoo already. Also, there will be a massive cleanup of some of the pages as I sort things out.

Stay tuned for more, coming soon to a website near you.
